With all things Scandinavian being trendy at the moment I came across the word Lagom which is Swedish for ‘just the right amount’ – neither too much or too little, just a happy medium.
Lagom is used to describe the Swedish way of life with regards to everything from attitudes to health and exercise, to diet and socialising.
It is a great mind-set to adopt when you consider how busy and goal-focused modern life can be. The fact that there is so many overweight people in the world at one end of the spectrum and many others trying to follow clean-eating and cutting out whole food groups at the other end.
Keeping fit the Lagom way would mean focusing on moving more in ways that suit your lifestyle and concentrating on things you enjoy rather than trying to go to the gym 3 times a week.
The Lagom way of eating prioritises good nutritious food – not viewing particular foods as harmful. With this mind-set the Scandinavians are less likely to follow fad diets. The key is not to overthink things – don’t worry about counting calories or eating clean – simply aim for nourishment and balance.
This mind-set also favours minimalism and clutter–free environments. Research backs up just how good this is for your well-being, including a study in the Journal of Neuroscience which reported that clutter overloads your visual cortex and interferes with your brains ability to process information. Another study found it may even affect your ability to make healthy food choices. Those in neat environments were twice as likely to snack on an apple over a chocolate bar!
So maybe we can all take something away from the Swedish Lagom way of living.
